Teacher Certification
A Saskatchewan Teacher's Certificate is required to teach in any K-12 school in Saskatchewan, be it public, or independent, and may be required to teach in a First Nations school.
To qualify for a certificate, you must meet the following basic requirements:
- a Saskatchewan grade 12 or its equivalent
- an approved university degree or its equivalent
- at least four years of post-secondary education
- completion of an approved teacher education program
- English proficiency or French proficiency (for those who teach in French).
The application process varies depending on if you graduated from a teacher education program in Saskatchewan, elsewhere in Canada or outside of Canada but are certified in another Canadian jurisdiction, or internationally.
Teacher certificates are not transferrable to other provinces/territories. It may be necessary to complete additional specified academic or professional areas of study to obtain a permanent Saskatchewan teaching certificate. You will be advised of specific additional requirements for Saskatchewan when you apply to Teacher Services, Ministry of Education, for a certificate.
